QR2: A Bogdanovic bt I Bozoljac 6-1, 6-3
Alex has been a man in a hurry so far this week, spending just over 40 minutes to complete two emphatic wins in the qualifying for ATP Las Vegas.
Like Andy Murray, Bogdanovic relishes the Vegas experience and it has translated to some superb on-court form. Croatian 3rd seed Ilja Bozoljac had beaten him last month in Heilbronn but was dispatched 6-1, 6-3 today as the British no 3 set up an enticing clash in the main draw elimination round with the latest American prospect, Sam Querrey.
Against Bozoljac, Bogdanovic served superbly, firing down 6 aces and making 76% of his 1st serves. He really dominated the baseline rallies winning 90% of the points on his second serve and 62% of the points on Bozoljac's second serve.
He got off to the best possible start, winning the first 10 points and quickly establishing a 3-0 first set lead. Another break to 30 gave him a 5-1 lead and he wrapped up the first set with 3 aces. There were signs of a possible turnaround at the start of the second as Bozoljac had 3 break points in Alex's first service game. However, Alex saved all 3 to hold and then broke to love 2 games later to lead 6-1, 3-2. At 4-2 he had 3 further break points but Bozoljac came up with some big serves to keep himself in the match. However, he could do nothing two games later (with Alex leading 6-1, 5-3) when some big hitting from the Briton secured a place in the next round on his 2nd match point. |

MDE: S Querrey bt A Bogdanovic 6-3, 6-2
Despite the backing of an illustrious supporters box featuring Andre Agassi, Brad Gilbert, Andy & Jamie Murray and GB DC Captain John Lloyd on a cold Las Vegan night, Alex was unable to find a way past the rising star Sam Querrey, who eased his way into the round robin with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win.
Alex will have to put the disappointment of the loss behind him now as he heads off for a training session with Brad and the Murray brothers, hoping to benefit in time to see his way through the Indian Wells Qualifiers. |
